NFL Power Rankings – Week 12

The Titans strong body of work early sure seems like a distant memory now, doesn’t it?  The rankings have not caught up yet, but they are starting to.  In related news, the Packers are still really good – but then, so are the Falcons.

What is notable about this week?

  • Well, at this point of the season the ordinal numbers are a little less interesting than the actual ratings stats themselves.  The way the rankings are calculated (using scoring margins) – ostensibly the delta between two teams in the “Margin” category is approximately the line I’d use on a neutral field.  Note that while the Packers are about a point favorite over 2nd, place – they are essentially a home field margin favorite over the remaining top 7 team.  Put simply, this is quite a coin flip season.  Contrast this with last year where only four teams fell in the 3.5 point “home field close” kind of level.
  • The Titans are obviously dive bombing, cratering with being shut out by the defensively pitiful Houston Texans.  Otherwise, the fits of sudden badness are going down – the bad teams are clear at this point.
  • The Bucs and Jags are still low on this totem pole – hard to find a ton of evidence that this is not luck.  Of course they make the playoffs they make the playoffs.  The 16 game season is hardly a significant sample to prove anything – so if a statistical anomaly pops up, whatever.   Nothing is shocking.
