2011 NBA Power Rankings – Week 12

Well, the Heat have slipped – losing LeBron for a couple games will do that to you – and the other teams have obviously taken a leap accordingly.  Most notable is the Lakers starting to find their legs with Bynum, and shaking off the effects of the Christmas beatdown.  As always, the methodology can be found here:

30 Cavaliers 8 32 93.028 (30) 104.893 (29) 2.013 1.946 (14) -7.907

This week’s observations:

  • The Cavaliers, after a 5-5 start, are starting – especially with the loss of their best player – to veer into being extra special bad.  Put is this way – the Nets final rating a eyar ago was -6.201.  Indeed, this season the Cavs rating is so low that it skews the data set.  16 of the 30 teams are above the average margin – and the 17th ranked Rockets are close.
  • On paper, the Indiana Pacers have a lot of decent players.  That it has been such herculean effort to secure a playoff bid is a bit disappointing.  Indeed the East is so top heavy with six lead pipe locks for the 8 playoff spots, and a mediocrity free for all for the final two spots between the Sixers, Pacers, Bucks, Bobcats and Pistons … and even the winless on the road Wizards are still within hailing distance.
