2011 NCAA Power Rankings #5

As is typical, it takes a sleepy, less sexy week where the Gameday crew went to cover a 10:15 PM game, for a couple of big stories to pop.  The first, sadly, involves the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech no longer chasing an unbeaten season.  Also, the slide of the former #1 Michigan continues, although the slide now involves a loss to a pretty solid Michigan State team.  Add Illinois and that is 3 of the 13 unbeatens going down.  With the unbeatens going down and conference play evolving a bit, suddenly some profiles have started to shoot up the ladder.  In particular, unranked Houston and Kansas State have shot up – mostly by their opponents improving profilewise enough to qualify for good team status.  As far as the rest?  The top looks awfully familiar:

Some basic impressions:

  • Just like that, Wisconsin is to the top of the Big Ten table.  Granted, it took being the only unbeaten left, but that counts.
  • How do you separate the teams at the top in the Big 12?  Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Kansas State are all unbeaten.  We know this will get fixed as they play each other, but Oklahoma State this week moves to top profile-wise.  The extra nudge of RPI breaks the tie.
  • LSU-Alabama, Nov 5.  That is all.

What does this do to the BCS if we did it today?

  • SEC: Alabama (1)
  • Big 12: Oklahoma State (2)
  • Big Ten: Wisconsin (10)
  • ACC: Clemson (6)
  • Big East: Rutgers (21)
  • Pac 12: Stanford (8)
  • NonAQ: Boise State (4)
  • #3 Team: Oklahoma (3)

So the two at-larges?  This week, LSU and Houston get the nods.  You could argue Michigan – and Michigan is much more realistic, but the undefeated #8 holds weight for me.  The impact?

  • BCS Title Game: Alabama vs Oklahoma State
  • Rose Bowl: Wisconsin vs Stanford
  • Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma vs Houston
  • Sugar Bowl: LSU vs Boise State
  • Orange Bowl: Clemson vs Rutgers

I suspect Houston will not be this good a choice the whole season though.  But they get the nod for now as a Top Ten entry.  If they lose though, things could slip quick.
