2012 NFL Update #4

Well, with just five weeks in the books, we are down to two unbeaten teams, and both of them came off weeks where they looked fairly vulnerable, whether it be the Texans against the Jets or the Falcons against the Redskins.  Meanwhile, the NFC West had another good week with San Francisco’s vivisection of Buffalo, Seattle winning ugly again and the Rams strangling the Texans.  Overall, this has been a much more interesting and quality division than we had any right to expect.  To the rankings, with methodology here:

Some of the takeaways from the week?

  • Well, the Saints four week sojourn at the bottom ended as Drew Brees threw his way into the record books.  Granted, the passing game in the paleazoic era that Unitas played in was totally different, but it’s still an honor.
  • Look at all of those NFC West teams, 4 in the top 8.  Still, one has to think this could change – but it is striking how quickly things have turned from the disaster of two years ago.
  • Really so far, this season has been a very NFC-centric field, and it shows with the dearth of highly ranked AFC teams.  Indeed, the Texans, Patriots and Ravens seem among a very small cadre of reliable sides.
